has taken a proactive stand in protecting the environment by “Going Green” with its recent conversion to the
PPG Envirobase waterborne paint finishing system. The collision center switched to a low-VOC waterborne
basecoat from the conventional solvent-based system.
“We’re jumping out in front, well before any federal mandates here in the Midwest,” says Deacon’s Collision
Center President and Managing Member Thomas Deacon. “PPG has a fantastic waterborne product. It offers
my shop great production efficiency, excellent color matches, and we believe that, environmentally, it’s the
right thing to do for the community and our employees.”
VOCs are chemical compounds commonly used in paint coatings and cleaning products. When released into
the atmosphere they help create ozone and smog. When compared to a conventional solvent-based basecoat,
PPG Envirobase High Performance can reduce basecoat sourced VOC emissions by up to 80%.
Waterborne basecoat is the latest coating technology that’s typically used by manufacturers to create the
original color on today’s vehicles. According to Mick McCune, Regional Business Development Manager for
PPG Industries Automotive Refinishing: “Adopting waterborne technology is an inevitable reality for the
collision industry. The fact that Deacon’s Collision Center has taken this proactive step in the conversion to
PPG Envirobase reinforces the position that Tom Deacon and his organization have taken as industry leaders.”
